Job Description

BC Tree Fruits Cooperative is looking for hard working and mechanically inclined individuals to join our team as Technical Operators.  In this role the Technical Operator will develop and learn all of the production machines in the facility.  This position is based out of our southern operation, in beautiful Oliver BC.

The Job

The Technical Operator will learn how to operate the following pieces of production equipment:

BOX MAKER OPERATOR

The Box Maker Operator is responsible for supplying boxes to the production line. It is the operator’s responsibility to understand the packing program to set up for all necessary shifts, to ensure that the correct paper is used, and make the correct number of boxes for the production needs. All duties must be performed in a safe manner to ensure compliance with government regulations, industry standards, customer requirements and to also ensure both food and worker safety. Lock out training is essential and must be clearly understood.

BIN FILLER OPERATOR

The Bin Filler Operator is responsible for loading sorted fruit into bins. It is the operator’s responsibility to determine which flumes to empty and ensure each bin is tagged with the appropriate size, variety and grade before loading it onto the in-feed pusher. All duties must be performed in a safe manner to ensure compliance with government regulations, industry standards, customer requirements and to also ensure both food and worker safety.

PALLETIZER

The Palletizer Operator Trainee is responsible for the carton pattern per pallet, including maintaining the machine and the area around the machine, and ensuring the correct number of cartons per pallet. Updated reference circulars will be provided as a resource. All duties must be performed in a safe manner to ensure compliance with government regulations, industry standards, customer requirements and to also ensure both food and worker safety. Lock out training is essential and must be clearly understood.

TRAY INSERTER

The Tray Inserter Operator is responsible for overseeing the operation of the tray inserter. It is their responsibility to ensure that the size of the trays are accurate, that the standard or euro tray settings are adjusted accordingly on all four tray inserter machines and to promptly communicate in a timely manner any issues to the mechanic, line operator or production supervisor. They are to clear out specific problems that are causing the tray inserter to not pack trays correctly and reset the equipment back to the programmed setting.  All duties must be performed in a safe manner to ensure compliance with government regulations, industry standards, customer requirements and to also ensure both food and worker safety.

BAGGING MACHINE OPERATOR

The Bagging Machine Operator is responsible for all functions related to the bagging machine operations ensuring that there is no unnecessary damage to the product or machinery and that there is no loss in productivity. Also to promptly communicate to the line operator or production supervisors of any issues with the product not evenly dispersed across the belt. The bagging machine operator will also help bag the apples on the bagging filler tables and ensure that all areas around the bagging machines are kept clean and general housekeeping is adhered too when all other duties have been completed. All duties must be performed in a safe manner to ensure compliance with government regulations, industry standards, customer requirements and to also ensure both food and worker safety. Lock out training is essential and must be clearly understood

TRAY DENESTER OPERATOR

The Tray Denester Operator Trainee is responsible for supplying trays to the production line. It is the operator’s responsibility to ensure that the size of trays will be correct and orientated to each program. All duties must be performed in a safe manner to ensure compliance with government regulations, industry standards, customer requirements and to also ensure both food and worker safety.

DUMPER OPERATOR

The Dumper Operator keeps records pertaining to bin weights and dump sheets at the beginning and end of each grower lot and reports data to the line operator for the correct grower to be entered into IMS. Also ensures the scale accuracy for grower lot changes. All duties must be performed in a safe manner to ensure compliance with government regulations, industry standards, customer requirements and to also ensure both food and worker safety. Lock out training is essential and must be clearly understood

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Adhere to all WSBC regulations and Cooperative safety procedures, including but not limited to:
    • First Aid Procedures
    • WHMIS Regulations (GHS)
    • Personal Protective Equipment
    • Lockout Procedures
  • Adhere to all pertinent Food Safe procedures as required and detailed under the Food Safety program and your training.
  • Other duties as assigned by Management within the context of:
  • Safe and efficient operation of the machine being scheduled to operate
  • Understand the lock out procedure and general safety of equipment
  • Advise supervisor of deviations and/or product needing to be returned to supplier.
  • Daily servicing, clean up and lubricating of equipment.
  • Maintain inventory levels
  • Perform minor mechanical adjustments.
  • May be required to work overtime at the start and end of shift and stagger breaks if needed.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions promptly to the production supervisor.
  • Work closely with maintenance and production supervisors.
  • Will be required to cross train in all locations within this specific classification.
  • The ability to operate multiple machines throughout the shift.
  • Operator’s responsibility that aren’t being used after production.
  • Any other duties as assigned within the nature of the job.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Be willing to submit to periodic proficiency testing as management deems necessary.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with fellow employees and management.
  • Be able to work with or without direct supervision, individually or part of a team.
  • Organized and able to maintain and keep clear, accurate, and detailed records with legible handwriting.
  • Proven diligence in following all WSBC and Cooperative work safe policies and procedures.
  • Be physically capable to perform all duties as required, including heavy labor and sustained strenuous physical activity.
  • Must be reliable and maintain above average attendance.
  • Must be able to perform tasks to the required standards.
  • Must be able to work all shifts, including AM / PM and weekends, 8 hour or 10 hour shifts, as required.
  • Be comfortable working with and around machinery in a team environment.

The wage for the Technical Operator role is $23/hour.
