Job Description

Reporting to the Group Leader, the painter is responsible for applying paints, varnishes, epoxies and wall coverings on interior and exterior surfaces, silk screens and hand paints signs.

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Receives instructions from supervision
  • Communicates with journeyperson, engineering, trade and operating supervision on methods, procedures and hazards; coordinates the services of other trades and service personnel in the planning of their portion of the job
  • Selects and prepares materials and lists of tools required; develops purchase order for input into on-line system (pinning authority $500 to $1000); expedites the delivery of materials from both external and internal suppliers
  • Consults blueprints; consults with engineering regarding standards
  • Inspects job site; makes field calculations and recommends repair or replacement
  • Recommend changes in materials and improvements in methods to supervision
  • Researches files, catalogues, sketches and purchase outlets for information
  • Receives work orders from supervision; prioritizes work on a daily basis utilizing the Maintenance Order System; estimates material costs and labour hours on jobs
  • Scrapes, burns, brushes, steam cleans, sand or water blasts to clean or prepare surfaces
  • Prepares surfaces by sanding, filling cracks and holes, applies fillers and sizes plaster walls
  • Mixes paints, adds pigments and other ingredients to obtain desired consistency and colour
  • Applies paints, varnishes, lacquers or epoxies to interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers or spraying equipment and techniques
  • Refinishes mobile ancillary equipment
  • Applies paints, stains, varnishes and oils to furniture
  • Applies decorated coatings of paper, fabric and plastic; grains, marbles, mottles, textures, stipples and burnishes surfaces
  • Measures, cuts, bevels and installs glass
  • Lays out, sketches, and uses artistic ability to develop and create free hand signs and posters, cuts stencils as required
  • Lays out, cuts and assembles letters, numbers and silk screen material, operates carbon arc flash and uses developer to produce silk screen for signs and posters
  • Checks and services mobile equipment with fuel, oil, and coolants; reports irregularities to supervision
  • Operates aerial man lift and swing stage, erects safety barriers, signs, scaffold and uses ladders to work on elevated positions
  • Operates lift truck or truck on private road or public highway to load, unload and transport tools to job site
  • Keeps tools and equipment in clean and orderly condition


  • Valid B.C. Provincial or Interprovincial Painter Tradesperson Certificate
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience at the journeyperson level
  • Excellent knowledge of painting material
  • Able to read and interpret drawings and specifications
  • Possess a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
